Lindsay never imagined she would own a home of her own. After a major life transition left her
financially independent, rent and bills suddenly rested entirely on her shoulders. Homeownership
felt unrealistic, and she nearly ruled out becoming a homeowner altogether.
Before discovering Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, Lindsay had made multiple
attempts to buy a home. As a Spanish instructor at Indiana University living on a single-income
teaching salary, the homes she qualified for were either in need of major repairs or located nearly
30 miles away from her work and community. Despite maintaining a stable, full-time job and
budgeting responsibly, owning a safe, livable home still felt out of reach, especially as she
watched many colleagues and friends become homeowners themselves.
Lindsay first learned about Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County through friends who were
Habitat homeowners. At first, she ruled out the idea of applying, believing others had a greater
need for housing. Still, she decided to apply with an open mind, and to her surprise, she was
accepted into the program.
When Lindsay began the program, the idea of successfully completing the path to
homeownership felt daunting. However, as she invested time into earning her sweat equity hours,
she grew more confident in her ability to learn new skills and take on new challenges.
“My sense of self-worth was pretty low, and seeing myself be consistent and succeed in the
program made me realize that I am capable of doing hard things,” said Lindsay.
On the construction site, Lindsay enjoyed working alongside fellow future homeowners and
volunteer crew leaders. From refugees from the Congo to retirees volunteering their time on-site,
the relationships she formed across the Habitat community strengthened her sense of safety and
security.
For Lindsay, homeownership represents a fresh start and the hope that she can build a lasting life
in Bloomington. Through the Habitat program, she made lasting friendships and can already
picture her home filled with colleagues, friends, and neighbors gathered around the table. She’s
especially looking forward to hosting Thanksgiving and welcoming loved ones with homemade
pastries at her housewarming celebration once she closes and officially moves in.
