Beginning July 1, a new Indiana law aimed at addressing the state’s affordable housing shortage will take effect. House Enrolled Act 1001 encourages communities to examine barriers to housing development and report their findings to the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.

The legislation seeks to support new housing construction by streamlining certain local approval processes and reducing regulations that can increase development costs. Supporters of the law believe that increasing housing supply will help improve affordability and create more opportunities for Hoosier families to achieve homeownership. Indiana lawmakers have estimated that the state needs approximately 50,000 additional homes to meet current demand.

As Indiana seeks solutions to its housing shortage, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County continues to play an important role in expanding affordable housing opportunities in our community. By building new homes, developing neighborhoods like Osage Place, and partnering with families on a path to homeownership, Habitat is helping increase the supply of attainable housing in our community. While no single organization can solve the housing crisis alone, collaborative efforts between nonprofits, local governments, businesses, and residents are essential to ensuring more Hoosier families have access to safe, stable, and affordable homes.
