What Does It Mean to Be a Habitat Homeowner?
Becoming a Habitat homeowner means more than receiving the keys to a new home. It means becoming part of a partnership built around stability, opportunity, and community.
At Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, we believe everyone deserves a decent place to live. Through our homeownership program, eligible families and individuals work alongside volunteers to build their homes, prepare for homeownership, and purchase their homes with an affordable mortgage.
So, what does it actually mean to be a Habitat homeowner?
You help build your home.
Habitat homeowners actively participate in the construction of their homes. Before moving in, partner families contribute “sweat equity” hours by working alongside volunteers and Habitat staff on their home and in other approved activities.
Sweat equity is the required volunteer labor and time that future homeowners must invest before they can purchase their home.
Your sweat equity is one part of the partnership that makes Habitat homeownership possible. It’s an opportunity to learn new skills, contribute to your community, and have a hand in building the place you’ll call home someday.
You prepare for homeownership.
Owning a home comes with new responsibilities, and Habitat homeowners receive support and education to help prepare them.
Before purchasing their homes, partner families participate in homeownership classes covering topics such as managing money, maintaining a home, and preparing for the responsibilities of homeownership.
These classes are designed to help families feel more prepared to build long-term stability, manage their finances, and care for their homes.
You purchase your home with an affordable mortgage.
Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County is both a builder and a lender.
The goal is to create a sustainable path to homeownership. Once a family completes the requirements of the homeownership program, Habitat offers them the opportunity to purchase their home with an affordable mortgage. Homeowners make monthly mortgage payments just like other homeowners.
You become part of a community.
Habitat homeownership is a partnership between homeowners, volunteers, donors, staff, and the community.
As a Habitat homeowner, you aren’t building your home alone. Hundreds of volunteers and supporters may contribute their time, skills, and resources throughout the process. In return, homeowners contribute their own time and effort to the partnership.
You take on the responsibilities of homeownership.
Homeownership brings freedom and stability, but it also comes with responsibilities.
Habitat homeowners are responsible for making their mortgage payments, maintaining their homes, and meeting the responsibilities that come with owning a property.
Our program is designed for people who are ready to take on those responsibilities and who meet Habitat’s eligibility requirements.
Who can become a Habitat homeowner?
